Art or Craft?
What's the difference? In the hands of some of our skillful and sensitive club members the difference seems to blur quite a lot. Some of our members put so much effort and love into their work that calling it art is not amiss. Of course all art assumes the techniques of the art being progressively mastered.

So who is to decide? Downscraft.org has chosen YOU. Yes YOU, we can't make up our minds!

How can you decide?
Is it a case of 'I know what I like'. No. That decides what you like, which is ok. But bear in mind that some of our most valued artistic styles (e.g. impressionism) have been aggressively abused at their first revealing.
Must it be a painting or a statue/sculpture? Have a look at some of the beautiful wood work, (pieces of furniture, not paintings) for a challenge to that view. Also the beautiful textile work from the Spinners and Weavers.
Is it creativity, being able to dream up something that no-one else has thought of?
Maybe this is a little closer, but still not close enough. Sensitive works are so often drawn from nature, which is an undending source of inspiration for artists and crafts people. Every artist and crafts person muses on what sort of person/God could have made the things that so delight us to view. Many may think He is the greatest artist of all. Copying (an awful word to artists generally) from nature doesn't seem to upset us at all.
Being able to depict such beauty in a fresh way is a special privelege. But it is doubtful that any creative person really imagines he/she is doing a better job than nature.

No, we still don't have a conclusion

Here is a topic for a great deal of thought, feeling and imagination. Do you have a view? Feel free to send it to Neil at ncordes@optusnet.com.au
